This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens: Numbers 4:24.
The first principle here is that service is a family affair. In the previous verse it says that males 30-50 were to serve but here we see that it was a family affair. The principle to draw from this is that when we serve it benefits others. Females included!
Getting up this morning was a pleasure and not a hardship because of the second principle I see in this verse. Serving God means that God is going to give us meaningful work to accomplish. The Israelites were slaves in Egypt. They were used to hard, forced, labor. God was mindful of the fact that giving them a responsibility would help them to feel productive.
He could have just rained mana down from the sky but instead He gave them the honor of being a servant. What a privilege to live every day of your life included in what God is doing.

Lovely
How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Psalm 84:1,2.
God is good. God is on my side. God has a good plan for my life. Blessings are chasing me and overflowing in my life.

Just Like Us
Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel. Genesis 49:6.
Family history. Everybody has one. Gershonites are no exception. Gershon's father was a man by the name of Levi.
Levi was the third born son of Jacob and Leah. There was big time rivalry between Jacob's two wives, Rachel and Leah. Rachel was the more beautiful of the two and Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah.
To say that Leah was desperate for her husband's affection would be an understatement. The name Levi means, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons." Genesis 29:34.
Levi and his brother Simeon distinguished themselves from their brothers by executing vigilante justice on the Shechemites for, "treating our sister like a prostitute." Genesis 34:31.
This action of brought strong reproof upon them by their father Jacob. Levi's younger brother Joseph labels them as men with swords of violence, quick to shed blood. Genesis 49:5-7.
And so there you have a little bit more background on the family history of the Gershonites. I hope that it blesses you. I hope that you will join me again as we seek His face evermore!

Roll Call
11/24/11
Of Gershon were the families of the Libnites and of the Shimeites. These are the families of the Gershonites. Numbers 3:21.
Gershon was a son of Levi. His brothers were Kohath and Merari. Gershon, Kohath and Merari (and their sons) served Aaron the priest in the duties of the tabernacle.
The Israelite's followed a cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night. When God said to move, the Gershonites were called to service.
The Gershonites had an awesome privilege and responsibility. They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, that is, the tent of meeting, its covering and its outer covering of durable leather, the curtains for the entrance to the tent of meeting, the curtains of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard, the ropes and all the equipment used in the service of the tent. The Gershonites are to do all that needs to be done with these things. Numbers 4:25,26.
There is such a wealth of detail in that which we will get to over the course of time and study. For now it is enough to meditate upon the many-sided grace (1 Peter 4:10) of God. Happy Thanksgiving!
